Sian Reid: a high profile leader with the right experience
Sian Reid is one of those shortlisted for selection as Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Cambridge.
Sian is well known in Cambridge, and has the profile to win an election campaign starting only weeks away. She is an experienced speaker and is convincing on radio and TV.
She won over 50% of the vote in her last City Council election, a higher share of vote than any other Lib Dem in Cambridge. She campaigns all year round and is in touch with local people.
The selection meeting will be held on Friday January 15th 2010.
Dear Liberal Democrat Member,
I will give my all to keep Cambridge Liberal Democrat and to serve you and the city as your MP.
I already have a high profile across the city - with 200 mentions in the Cambridge News alone - and that's vital when the election campaign will start only weeks after you select our candidate.
It's not just about winning the election - it's also about what we do if we win. The job of an MP has many aspects - and has changed much since my father was a Liberal MP in the 1940s! I will bring to the job my experiences as a secondary school and Open University teacher, a Young Enterprise mentor, the managing director of telecomms firms and as an Executive Councillor on Cambridge City Council for four years.
I live here in Cambridge with my family and love our community.
On the Council I have fought for affordable homes, better transport, low traffic speeds, local shops and green open spaces. I am putting climate change at the heart of the Council's work and I've built a national reputation for the Lib Dems' green achievements in Cambridge. I helped start the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation seven years ago. It has now given more than £3m to over 1,100 projects in the county.
As an MP I would work with the Liberal Democrat parliamentary team to promote our core values of freedom, fairness and openness. I would particularly promote the Liberal Democrat green agenda. I would listen to your views and I would make sure they are heard at Westminster.
